About The Citadel

The Citadel, officially called The Military College of South Carolina, is a state-supported, comprehensive college located in Charleston, also known as The Holy City due to the prominence of churches, housed within its limits, which is the largest city and the county seat of Charleston County, in the US state of South Carolina, also being the largest and the oldest city in the state, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 112 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which also makes it the 2nd most populous city in South Carolina, being closely behind the state capital Columbia.

The Citadel was established in December, 1842, when , the South Carolina Legislature passed an Act "to convert the Arsenal at Columbia, and The Citadel and Magazine in and near Charleston, into Military Schools", tranforming the two State Arsenals into the South Carolina Military Academy. The Citadel is best known for its undergraduate Corps of Cadets military program for men and women, which combines academics, physical challenges and military discipline. In 2008, it was placed among the "Best Values in the South" by the U.S. News & World Report annual publication, being ranked 2nd for "Best master's degree granting public institution in the South", 5th for "All (public and private) master's degree granting colleges and universities in the South", and 7th for "Best value among all institutions in the South".
